Alabama Stakes History

The Alabama Stakes is a prominent horse race held annually at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Established in 1872 when won by Woodbine, it is named after William Cottrell's filly, Alabama, who won the Saratoga Cup in 1870.

The event is a key highlight of the summer racing season, attracting top competitors and horse racing enthusiasts from across the country.

It is the third oldest race in the United States exclusively for fillies and is part of the American Triple Tiara series, which also includes the Acorn Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks.

The Alabama has been run at various distances, and was not run in the following years: 1893-96, 1898-1900, and 1911-12. It was famously one of few races that was still held during the Second World War, although it made its temporary home at Belmont Park.

There have been some memorable performances in the race throughout history, including Go For Wand's record-breaking speed finish of 2:00.80 in the 1990 edition.

A number of recent winners of the race have also come with massive reputations, including 2020 victor Swiss Skydiver, who also became the sixth filly to win a Triple Crown race after her win in the Preakness Stakes.
