The Belmont Derby is a Grade 1 stakes race held annually at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York and is run over a distance of 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs) on turf.

Please note: the 2025 Belmont Derby will be held at Belmont At The Big A in Elmont, New York due to ongoing renovations at Belmont Park.

The 2025 Belmont Derby has a purse of $750,000 and will take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025.

Belmont Derby History

The Belmont Derby Invitational, held every July at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, is a premier Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds. The race began in 1929 as the Jamaica Handicap at the Jamaica Race Course in Queens, New York.

After the Jamaica track closed in 1959, the race was shifted to the Aqueduct Race Track in Queens where it was contested in 1960, 1975 to 1977, 1979 to 1981, and 1987. Now, the race permanently resides in Belmont.

The race has undergone several changes in its history. Initially, it was run at six furlongs, then extended to 1 1/8 miles, and finally settled at its current distance of 1 1/4 miles in 2014.

In 2009, the race became a Grade I event.
