Belmont Stakes History

The Belmont Stakes is a prestigious horse racing event held annually at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. It's the final leg of the American Triple Crown, following the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

The Belmont Stakes was first run in 1867, making it one of the oldest horse races in the United States. It was founded by August Belmont Sr., a wealthy businessman and horse enthusiast.

Originally run at distances ranging from 1 1/8 miles to 1 5/8 miles, the current distance of 1 1/2 miles – one lap around the Belmont oval – was established in 1926.

In 1930, the Belmont Stakes became the final leg of the American Triple Crown, joining the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. The Triple Crown is one of the most coveted titles in horse racing, and the Belmont Stakes is often the deciding race.

Some notable moments in the history of the Belmont Stakes include:

  • In 1973, Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths, setting a record that still stands today.
  • In 2015, American Pharoah became the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37 years, with a dominant performance in the Belmont Stakes.
  • The year 2018 marked the 25th anniversary of Julie Krone's victorious ride on Colonial Affair in the 1993 Belmont Stakes. She is still the only female jockey to have won a Triple Crown event.

James Rowe holds the record for the most Belmont victories, with eight wins achieved between 1883 and 1913. However, Woody Stephens's streak of five consecutive Belmont wins from 1982 to 1986 is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable and challenging training feats in racing history.

Today, the Belmont Stakes is one of the most popular horse racing events in the world, attracting millions of viewers and spectators.
