Manhattan Stakes History
The Manhattan Stakes began in 1867 at Jerome Park, originally run on dirt. In 1895, the race transitioned to Morris Park, where it continued to attract top competitors until 1904.
In 1905, the race moved to Belmont Park and transitioned to turf. Over the years, it has been contested at various distances and surfaces, finally settling at 1 1/4 miles on turf since 1970. In 1991, the Manhattan Stakes became a part of the Belmont Stakes weekend, adding to its prominence.
Notable horses such as Round Table, Gio Ponti, and Flintshire have claimed victory in this race. Initially a handicap race, it switched to allowance conditions in 2014.
This race has witnessed many memorable moments and remains a significant fixture in American horse racing.
