Travers Stakes History

The Travers Stakes, often called the “Mid-Summer Derby,” is a prestigious horse race held annually at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Established in 1864, it is the oldest major thoroughbred horse race in the United States. Named after William R. Travers, the first president of the Saratoga Racing Association, this race is a highlight of the summer racing season.

Over the years, the Travers Stakes has become a key event for horses that have competed in the Triple Crown races earlier in the year. Many winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes have also participated in the Travers.

In 1941, Whirlaway became the only horse ever to win the superfecta: he'd won the Triple Crown, then went on to take the Travers, as well.

In 1913, the race saw its first dead heat between Rock View and Whisk Broom. In 1962, Jaipur and Ridan battled for the entire race, to the finish stride for stride, in one of the closest races in history.

The Travers Stakes is renowned for its competitive field and has seen many memorable moments and upsets. The race attracts top trainers, jockeys, and horses, making it a significant event in the horse racing calendar. The winning horse is awarded the Man o' War Cup, named after the legendary racehorse, and a blanket of carnations.

The event also includes a series of festivities and other stakes races, creating a festive atmosphere at Saratoga.
